What is CLAP?
The Community Legal Aid Programme or CLAP is a joint legal aid initiative by the Eugene Dupuch Law School
Legal Aid Clinic, the Office of The Attorney-General, The Bahamas Bar Association and the Caribbean Agency for Justice Solutions.
What services does CLAP offer?
CLAP provides members of the public access to free legal advice and information. CLAP may also offer legal representation in limited circumstances.
What is legal advice?
Legal advice is the provision of advice on the law and its effect as governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
What is legal representation?
Legal representation is acting as your lawyer in relation to your proceedings in court or before an administrative agency or tribunal.
Will CLAP lawyers come to court with me?
CLAP attorneys generally only provide legal advice and guidance. In exceptional cases and where persons involved have no income, a CLAP attorney may volunteer to provide legal representation in court.
Are CLAP lawyers paid by CLAP?
The CLAP lawyers and administrative staff are all volunteers who provide their services free of charge to help members of the public.
Are CLAP services free?
All legal advice and guidance services provided through CLAP is free. However, where a CLAP attorney volunteers to provide legal representation, you will be responsible for the payment of all out-of-pocket costs and expenses charged by a third party.
CLAP may also refer a matter to the Eugene Dupuch Law School Legal Aid Clinic and ask the Clinic to consider providing legal representation. Matters accepted by the Law School’s Legal Aid Clinic are however subject to nominal legal fees which are determined based on the applicant’s ability to pay.

Arrangements can be made for you to meet with a CLAP attorney virtually (on-line). Persons on the Family Islands are welcome to contact CLAP for assistance with setting up a virtual consultation.
